Porter's wake-up call

Gail Porter's Big Breakfast stand-in slot could become permanent

Television presenter Gail Porter has emerged as a hot contender to take over from Sara Cox on The Big Breakfast.

Cox is not leaving the Channel 4 show until April, when she becomes the new host of the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show, but next week she is going on holiday and Porter has been chosen as her stand-in.

And Big Breakfast bosses have not ruled out the possibility that she might take on the job permanently when Cox goes for good.

Breakfast hopefuls

Sara Cox is leaving to host the Radio 1 Breakfast Show
A spokeswoman for the programme said: "Gail will be doing the Big Breakfast for a week next week, but nothing has been confirmed yet about whether she will be joining permanently.

"We've no idea what Gail will be like, because you never know until someone's in front of the camera, although she has got lots of previous experience, so she must be a hopeful."

Producers at the Big Breakfast said to be also considering "a couple of other hopefuls" to fill the show's coveted third main presenter slot alongside Johnny Vaughan and Liza Tarbuck.

Presenting background

Porter, 28, currently presents the Movie Chart Show on Channel 5.

She has worked on children's television on both ITV and BBC - most notably as presenter of the BBC's Fully Booked - and she has co-hosted BBC Scotland's regional Children In Need appeals.

She has also presented an evening radio show on Virgin Radio and a late night London entertainment show for LWT.

But Porter is also famous for taking her clothes off. She posed naked - bathed in blue light and covered in baby oil - for GQ magazine.

More notably she caused a storm when a 100ft high image of her naked body was beamed onto the side of the Houses of Parliament for FHM magazine.

Channel 4's Big Breakfast has seen a number of characters come and go since it first launched in 1992.

Main presenters have included Chris Evans, Gaby Roslin, Denise Van Outen, Neighbours actor Mark Little, model Kelly Brook and Zoe Ball.

While third members of the front-of-camera team have included Paula Yates, Lily Savage and Vanessa Feltz.
