Earthy name for Emma's baby Actress Emma Thompson and her partner Greg Wise have finally named their two-week old baby. The baby girl, who was originally referred to as Jane.com while her parents searched for a name, is to be called Gaia Romilly Wise. The name Gaia refers to the goddess of the Earth. Proud dad Greg said: "We spent ages looking through books of names and settled on Gaia because of its environmental connotations." Depardieu named greatest living actor Gerard Depardieu, star of Cyrano De Bergerac and Green Card, has been voted the greatest living actor by a French opinion poll. The Frenchman polled equal votes with John Wayne, ahead of Robert De Niro, Alain Delon and Marlon Brando. The late French actor Jean Gabin topped the poll as actor of the century with 36% of the vote. Gabin, whose career spanned 40 years, was the star of films such as Renoir's La Grande Illusion. The Eagles reunite to record album The Eagles, whose Greatest Hits album has been declared the biggest-selling album ever in the US, are getting back together to record a new album. The band, who found world fame with the song Hotel California, split up in 1979 and briefly reunited in 1994. "I think we are still capable of writing good, meaningful songs," drummer Don Henley told the Los Angeles Times. "We still have our differences but we just don't take it personally." Ben Affleck tipped to play Batman Actor Ben Affleck is rumoured to be in the running to play Batman, according to US film columnist Liz Smith. In her syndicated column this week she says Affleck has been talked of as a major contender for the next Batman movie. The last film was George Clooney's Batman & Robin in 1997, but Smith claims the Warner Brothers studio "still feels there's life in the Caped Crusader yet and that Affleck would look mighty good". Ben Affleck is currently starring in the Kevin Smith movie, Dogma. Religious channel fined £20,000 over advert A religious broadcaster has been fined £20,000 after screening an ad that suggested social problems are caused by a lack of Christian standards. The advert on the Christian Channel cable and satellite service was for an evangelical rally and stated "demonic forces" control the media and that homosexuality is "an abomination". The Independent Television Commission decided the ad breached rules on political impartiality, playing on people's fears, offending human dignity and denigrating other religions. Charles gives first thoughts on 2000 The Prince of Wales will deliver Radio 4's first Thought For The Day in the year 2000, it has been announced. The four-minute talk - written by the prince himself - was recorded at his home, Highgrove in Gloucestershire, earlier this month and it will be broadcast on 1 January 2000. It will be the Prince of Wales's second appearance on the long-running radio slot. His first broadcast in 1995 was to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the end of World War II. |
