Hall joins book panel
Jerry Hall: Part of a diverse panel

Model Jerry Hall has been named as a judge for one of the UK's most prestigious literature prizes, the Whitbread Book Of The Year.

The 43-year-old will join actress Imogen Stubbs, Conservative front-bencher Ann Widdecombe, and six others to choose both the four main awards and the children's book award.

Hall, who is also a contributing editor to Tatler magazine, said: "I'm delighted to be asked. I love reading and I love reading to my children."

She split up with Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger earlier this year, although the couple remain friends.

Imogen Stubbs: Also on the jury
The awards have had a history of celebrities acting as judges - previous years have seen film critic Jonathan Ross and actress Maureen Lipman on the panel.

A spokeswoman said: "We think it's more interesting than having a group of people drawn exclusively from the literary world and will lead to the winner being a good read."

The panel is led by Dr Eric Anderson, the rector of Lincoln College, Oxford, who was singled out by Prime Minister Tony Blair as his favourite teacher last year.

The main awards are divided into four categories: best novel, first novel, poetry and biography. Former Newsnight presenter Francine Stock is in the running for best first novel for A Foreign Country, while late poet laurete Ted Hughes could score win his third Whitbread in a row with Alcestis, a year after he died.

J K Rowling is in the running for her children's book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

The winners will be announced on 25 January in a ceremony shown live on BBC Two.
