Shania shines in awards shortlist
Canadian country singer Shania Twain, pop sensation Britney Spears and soul diva Whitney Houston lead the nominations for next month's American Music Awards. The trio each have three nominations for the awards, which are voted for by a poll of 20,000 US music buyers. The nominations are based on record sales and radio airplay throughout the year, in contrast with the Grammys, which are decided by an academy of voters. The threesome are all nominated for the favourite female artist prize. Twain, 34, whose album Come On Over has sold more than 12 million copies in the US since its release in 1997, won one award out of five nominations last year. This year, she is also nominated in favourite country artist and favourite adult contemporary artist categories.
Despite near-ubiquitous airplay in the UK, Whitney Houston's My Love Is Your Love album has been considered a commercial disappointment in the US, selling two million copies. But it is nominated for favourite soul/R 'n' B album and the 35-year-old is also nominated for favourite R 'n' B artist. Leading male acts - with two nominations each - were pop idols the Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, country acts Garth Brooks and George Strait, rapper Kid Rock and veteran band Santana.
The favourite male pop/rock artist is a fight between Lenny Kravitz, Ricky Martin and Will Smith. The American Music Awards traditionally favour middle-of-the-road acts. In the 20 categories, the only UK representative is Phil Collins, who faces Cher and Shania Twain in the favourite adult contemporary artist category. The awards take place at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on 17 January, and will feature live performances from Jennifer Lopez, pop group N'Sync, and country act Brooks and Dunn. |
