Baby.com for actress Emma
Celebrating: Emma Thompson and partner Greg Wise

Double Oscar-winner Emma Thompson has given birth to a daughter, it has been announced.

The baby was born at The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, St John's Wood, London, at 0900 on Saturday, and weighed 7.5lbs, her agent Lorraine Hamilton said.

The father, Emma's partner - actor Greg Wise - said they still hadn't made a decision on a name.

"At the moment, we are calling her jane.com," he said.

Ms Hamilton added: "The whole family is doing well."

Thompson, 40, and 34-year-old Wise met in 1995 when they worked together on Sense And Sensibility - the film for which she won a Best Screenplay Oscar.

She suffered a miscarriage in 1997 and made no secret of her longing to have a baby.

Career on hold

Speaking at the premiere of Wise's latest film, Mad Cows in October, Thompson said she was "excited" and "scared" at the prospect of motherhood.

She added she was putting her acting career on hold because she would be "mad not to fully enjoy being a mother".

"I've been incredibly lucky and haven't had any difficulties at all, no morning sickness or anything," she added.

Thompson, who is divorced from actor Kenneth Branagh, has not been idle over the past several months.

She has written two scripts - a political epic and a children's film - and made a cameo appearance in Ben Elton's new film Bay Baby.
