Lennon first in McCartney queue
Sir Paul's planning an exclusive one-off show

Sir Paul McCartney fans have been queuing up for a chance to see their hero play Liverpool's Cavern Club - with John Lennon first in line.

But this Lennon was not even alive when the former Beatle was killed 19 years ago this week.

The 18-year-old, who changed his name by deed poll three weeks ago, was among 150 gathered outside the Liverpool branch of the HMV retail chain when it opened on Monday.

Fans also gathered at stores in London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcaste, as they each gave out 250 forms entitling fans to enter Thursday's draw for just 150 places in the crowd at the gig on 14 Decembeer. All 1,250 forms were given away within five minutes.

Lennon - better known to his friends as Ben Lomas, is originally from Worcester but moved to Liverpool's Penny Lane area hoping to get employment in the Beatles industry.

He said: "I've always loved the Beatles and seeing Sir Paul back where he started his career is too good an opportunity to pass by.

"I changed my name to John Lennon as a tribute to him. It was the best way of honouring him I could find."

The Paul At The Cavern show will be his 281st performance at the venue, which was closed in 1973, was filled in and then years later reopened on the same site.

Sir Paul, who appeared on BBC One's Parkinson show, told Michael Parkinson: "Rock and roll has shaped my life and changed the sound and the thinking of the century.

"Before the Beatles ever got big we started out playing rock and roll at the Cavern. I am going back for just one night as a nod to the music that has always and will ever thrill me.

"I can't think of a better way than to rock out the end of the century with a rock and roll party at the Cavern."
