Spice Girls 'worst group of 1999'
Spice Girls One award the all-girl band could have done without

The Spice Girls have been crowned the Worst Group of 1999 in the Smash Hits Poll - just a day after they kicked off their first series of concerts for more than a year.

Two years ago the all-girl act was named Best British Group, but on Sunday the Worst Group title was not the only embarrassing trophy to come their way at the Smash Hits Awards Party in London.

Mel C Not a good night for Mel C
Sporty Spice Mel C scooped the Worst Female Singer, Worst Single, Worst Video, Most Tragic Haircut and Worst Dressed Person titles.

And to rub salt in their wounds, former Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell took second place in the Best Female Solo Star category.

The title was won by US teenage singer Britney Spears, who won the same prize plus three others at November's MTV Europe Music Awards.

Ms Halliwell was forced to pull out of the winners' party because of sickness.

Award for Boyzone's Stephen

She is resting under doctor's orders at her 2m home in Langley, Berkshire, after being laid low by viral pleurisy - an inflammation of the lungs.

Chris Evans - who she was linked with last month - was named the Worst Person on Radio.

And despite the disparaging nature of some of the awards, there was genuine warmth towards Boyzone's Stephen Gately, who won Hero of 1999.

The singer announced in June that he was gay and had a boyfriend. It was feared it could upset his millions of young female fans while he was at the height of his career.

But they rallied round and flooded the Boyzone website with messages of support, which was also reflected in the awards, which are voted for by readers of Smash Hits magazine.

The singer was delighted to receive it, and appeared to be very moved by the occasion.

Dozens of artists received awards at the event, which was presented by pop group Steps and attended by thousands of screaming fans.
