Viewers vote for top record
S Club 7: Nominees for ITV's Record of the Year

Macy Gray, Westlife and S Club 7 are among the acts hoping to be voted record of the year in a poll on prime-time TV.

Boyzone frontman Ronan Keating, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are also in contention for the live awards, which are being broadcast on ITV.

Last year, 10 million viewers watched the inaugural Record of the Year contest, with over one million voting Boyzone's No Matter What the winner.

Organisers took the 50 highest-selling singles this year, and cut out the duplicates where one act featured twice.

Then music industry subscribers to pundit Jonathan King's magazine The Tip Sheet voted on the remaining records - and a list of 20 was drawn up.

ITV will screen video clips from the 20 nominees on Saturday, and the top 10 will make it through to a grand final a week later, hosted by Denise Van Outen.

Jonathan King, who is behind the show, said Boyzone and Sir Cliff Richard were among the early names on the list but had failed to make it to the later stages.

"It's missing quite a few names that we thought would be in there," he said. King added the show would appeal to all ages, and not just to younger viewers.

"My mum, who is 83, had never even heard of Boyzone and she voted for them."

King added his tip for success was Shania Twain's That Don't Impress Me Much. The Canadian country singer has sold more albums in the UK this year than any other act.

Denise Van Outen joked she was not surprised to see her boyfriend Jay Kay's band Jamiroquai in the poll.

"He can't sing and he can't dance," she said.
