Streisand's big sale begins
Barbra Streisand: Selling off furniture and memorabilia

A collection of Hollywood star Barbra Streisand's old furniture made nearly $3m at a New York auction on Monday.

The sale at Christie's showed off the singer and actress's sharp eye for modern design.

It included tables, chairs and lamps, as well as an oak and wrought-iron sideboard designed by Gustav Stickley, which sold for $596,500 (£372,760) to an anonymous bidder.

The sale also saw a pair of cabinets by the same designer sell for $142,500 (£89,060). They were designed for Stickley's home in New Jersey, and were bought by a museum devoted to Stickley's work that now occupies the house.

The Craftsman Farms Foundation's executive director, Tommy McPherson, said: "We are tickled to have the cabinets back."

Although Streisand's publicist denies it, McPherson said the foundation had appealed to Streisand for her to sell or donate the cabinets, which she bought at auction in 1988.

Another item attracting a high price was a three-tiered oak table designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and George Mann Nickenden. It sold for $244,500 (£152,790) - three times the Christie's estimate.

Overall, the sale made $2,986,810 (£1,866,587), with more items to be sold on Thursday. They include a vintage pink chiffon evening gown, and a 1956 Ford Thunderbird.

Christie's expert Beth Vilinsky said: "the results of today's landmark sale of important design are testament to the achievements and creative genius of the leading designers of the 20th century."

The sale is a further demonstration of Streisand's canny way with money. Earlier this year she told US magazine Fortune how she was making cash out of online share dealing.

On New Year's Eve she will make a rare live appearance in Las Vegas at a concert to mark the new millennium.
