Actor Craig Charles is to return to Coronation Street after his suspension from the soap following allegations of taking crack cocaine.

Charles, 42, who plays cab driver Lloyd Mullaney, will begin filming on the ITV soap again in January.

He was suspended in June after photographs in a tabloid newspaper allegedly showed him taking drugs in the back of a car.

Charles recently received a caution for possession of a class A drug.

The married father-of-three also presented a funk show on the BBC's digital radio station 6 Music on Friday and Saturdays before the alleged incident.

At the time, a BBC spokesman said: "We can confirm that Craig will not be presenting his show while we are talking to him about these allegations."

No decision has been made as to whether the actor will return to his presenting role.

Charles made his name playing Dave Lister in the TV space comedy Red Dwarf.

He had hosted BBC Two's Robot Wars and taken part in Channel 4's The Games before joining Coronation Street last year.

He spent several months in prison in 1994 awaiting trial on a rape charge, but was cleared in February 1995.
