Snoopy creator has cancer
Charles M Schulz, creator of one of the most popular cartoon strips in the world

Charles M Schulz, creator of the popular Peanuts comic strip, has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

The Peanuts success story
The cartoon appears in 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries
It has been the basis of plays, books, TV programmes and recordings
The first cartoon appeared 50 years ago
The cancer was discovered as the 76-year-old Schulz underwent emergency surgery last Tuesday for a blocked abdominal aorta last week, his publisher United Feature Syndicate said.

His wife Jean told reporters that doctors were determining the best course of treatment.

"I don't see additional surgery proposed at this point," she said to a local newspaper in their home town of Santa Rosa near San Francisco.

Peanuts, with its popular characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy the dog, is one of the most popular cartoons in the world.

Mr Schulz, who still draws each Peanuts strip himself and generally works five weeks in advance, is said to have created enough new strips to last until the end of the year.

"United Feature Syndicate hopes and expects that Mr Schulz will be able to produce new material for the new year," a statement from the publishers said.
