Cruise last in 'best friend' poll

Cruise was also named the most irritating actor in a poll last year
Actor Tom Cruise has come last in a poll to find the celebrity people would most like to have as their best friend.

The star of the Mission: Impossible series trailed in behind other screen heroes such as Jack Nicholson, Colin Farrell and Brad Pitt.

Jack Black, star of King Kong and Nacho Libre, came top of the poll, which was run by Yahoo! Entertainment.

Black beat Johnny Depp, who came second, followed by Will Smith and Samuel L Jackson.

Pitt, Orlando Bloom and Mel Gibson shared fifth place, although the survey was carried out before Gibson made now notorious anti-Semitic remarks following his arrest for drink-driving.

A total of 2,373 people were asked to choose between 11 actors in the UK-wide poll.

While Black scored one in four of all votes cast, Cruise took just 3% of the vote. But he is unlikely to be unduly concerned - in June, Forbes magazine put him top of its list of the world's most powerful celebrities.
