ITV has denied that a child actress in Coronation Street is being replaced because of "harrowing" scenes or a heavy workload.

Two-year-old Madison Hampson, who plays Tracy Barlow's daughter Amy, is to be replaced by another young actress.

A newspaper report claimed her parents felt her role was making her upset and affecting her health.

But a spokeswoman for Coronation Street said it was commonplace for child actors to be replaced regularly.

She added that they work within stringent guidelines.

"At that age they are still learning about their environment, about colours, about who is who - it is a lot to take in," she said.

"It is hard for children to be on set at that age and we regularly have different actors or actresses before we settle on somebody at around 16.

"We work within very strict guidelines and would never cause a child to feel distress or uncomfortable."

Madison is currently at the heart of a fake pregnancy storyline between Tracy, played by Kate Ford, and Charlie Stubbs, played by actor Bill Ward.

Two-year-old Amber Chadwick is taking over, and filmed her first scenes on set five weeks ago.
