The Pink Panther, which opened in the US last month to dire reviews, made nearly £2m in its opening three days.
V for Vendetta, produced by the Wachowski brothers who made The Matrix, made just under £1.2m.
South African movie Tsotsi, which won the best foreign language film Oscar, was another new entry at number 10.
The film, which opened in 86 cinemas, made £200,000 in its first three days - in contrast, The Pink Panther opened in 403 cinemas.
Tsotsi is about the life of a young carjacker who finds a baby in the back of one of his stolen cars.
Last week's number one, The Hills Have Eyes, slipped to number three, while Chicken Little held firm in fourth spot.
The Pink Panther, which also stars singer Beyonce Knowles, is a prequel to Peter Sellers' original movie of the same name, which spawned three sequels in the 1970s.
