50 Cent is to star in a movie about an orphan who becomes a drug dealer before making it as a famous rapper, directed by Jim Sheridan.
The story mirrors the real life of 50 Cent - real name Curtis Jackson - who was jailed for selling crack before finding fame.
Jones was nominated for two music Oscars for The Color Purple in 1985.
He was also nominated for the film scores for In the Heat of the Night, In Cold Blood, The Italian Job and The Wiz.
The film will reflect the real life of 50 Cent
Get Rich or Die Tryin' is named after 50 Cent's first hit album, which since its release in 2002 has made him one of the biggest stars in the rap world.
Irish director Jim Sheridan's previous credits include My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and In America, which all received Oscar nominations.
Get Rich or Die Tryin' is due for release in the US in December, and in the UK in January.
The script has been written by Terence Winter, who wrote many of the episodes of gritty TV drama The Sopranos.
