Jodie Foster
Fostering talent: Jodie is honoured for her contribution to the movies
Actress-director Jodie Foster has been honoured for her contribution to the movie world at the American Cinematheque Moving Picture Ball in Los Angeles.

The prestigious annual award is presented to one artist a year and previous recipients include Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Travolta and Steven Spielberg.

The 36-year-old star is best known for her Academy Award winning roles in The Accused (1988) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

She made her directorial debut in 1991 with Little Man Tate, and can be seen in the lead role of the forthcoming film, Anna and the King.


Exhausted Catatonia cancel UK tour

Top Welsh band Catatonia, who played to 80,000 people at Wembley's NetAid concert, have cancelled their December UK tour because they need a break.

In a statement on their website the band say: "After 22 months of whirlwind success we need a break and as a band haven't been able to put together a new show we'd be proud of."

We know many people will be disappointed - for this we apologise, but feel in our hearts that this is the best course of action for all of us."

Catatonia, who are reportedly among the acts scheduled for next year's Glastonbury festival, promise that they will be back "better and stronger next year".

The band's new single Karaoke Queen is released on 1 November.


Double Jeopardy holds top US film spot

Hit murder thriller Double Jeopardy has held on to the No 1 US box office spot for the third week running after scooping $13.6m (£8.5m) in takings.

The film starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones, trumped Harrison Ford in Random Hearts, which opened with $13.1m (£8.2m) in second place.

Double Jeopardy which has grossed $65.8m (£41.1m) in 17 days sees Judd play a woman out for revenge against her husband, who faked his own death and framed her for murder.


Actress Meg to earn £8m for new movie

Film star Meg Ryan will be paid £8m for her latest movie, a figure that makes her one of the biggest earning actresses in Hollywood.

Proof Of Life is the story of a hostage negotiator who falls in love with the wife of the man he is hired to save.

LA Confidential star Russell Crowe is tipped to play opposite Ryan.

Filming will begin next March after Ryan has completed work on her current movie This Man, This Woman.


Zeta Jones and Costner 'border' on film

Catherine Zeta Jones is to star with Kevin Costner in Borders, an epic love story set against the backdrop of UN relief efforts around the world.

The Welsh actress, who is engaged to American film star Michael Douglas, will play a British relief worker and Costner a US doctor in the story.

The film, written by British writer Caspian Tredwell-Owen, re-teams Costner with his JFK director Oliver Stone, who will direct and co-produce Borders.


DiCaprio to star in new Scorsese movie

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in Martin Scorsese's violent thriller Gangs of New York.

The film chronicles Irish and Italian immigrants who fought for control of New York's streets in the 19th Century.

Gangs of New York has been plagued with delays after many studios failed to warm to the film's violent nature.

It was developed by Scorsese and his Age Of Innocence partner Jay Cocks.


US actor Lee Richardson dies age 73

American stage and screen actor Lee Richardson, who was noted for his English accent, has died aged 73.

The Chicago-born star, who died of cardiac arrest, was a fixture on the New York stage for more than 40 years.

However, he performed in so many roles with an English accent that he was widely assumed to be British.

Richardson was nominated for a Tony Award in 1973 for his performance in Vivat! Vivat Regina!


Fawcett to appear in Ally McBeal story

Actress Farrah Fawcett is to make a guest appearance in an episode of US comedy Ally McBeal.

Apart from guest appearances as herself in The Larry Sanders Show and The Fall Guy, it will be the first time in 20 years that Fawcett has appeared in a television series.

The 52-year-old actress, best known from the hit '70s show Charlie's Angels, plays an editor at a Boston magazine who loses her job and sues for sexual harassment.


Murdoch orders TV series to be scrapped

Twentieth Century Fox boss Rupert Murdoch has axed a new television series based on the hit film Cruel Intentions before it even went on air.

Thirteen episodes of Manchester Prep had been ordered but Daily Variety has reported that Murdoch was unhappy about the sexual nature of one of the scenes and cancelled the whole series.

Series producer Roger Kumble said: "We were unable to come to terms on the ultimate direction of the show."
