Harvey 'over worst' of injuries

Harvey's manager believes it was a "freak accident"
Singer Brian Harvey is "over the worst" after an accident in which he was crushed under the wheels of his own car, his manager said.

The former East 17 vocalist has been moved to St George's Hospital in south London which specialises in chest and abdominal injuries.

Manager Simon Harrison said Harvey was in a "critical but stable" condition, but is heavily sedated on a ventilator.

"The life threatening operations have been done," said Mr Harrison.

He added: "The abdomen was the most important element. From now it looks like a repair job."

The 30-year-old had the accident on Tuesday as he was preparing to drive to a recording session.

He suffered a broken leg, pelvis and a crushed abdomen and ribs.

Speculation

His manager threw doubt on speculation Harvey may have tried to take his own life.

Mr Harrison: "People have speculated it might be a suicide attempt but I don't think you could plan this if you tried. There are easier ways to kill yourself.

"It was just a freak accident and a piece of seriously bad luck.

He added: "Unfortunately, it comes at a time when everybody knows he has been suffering from depression.

"But I spoke to him just a couple of days before this happened and he was very upbeat about recording some new music."

Brian Harvey in East 17

Harvey, who was a contestant on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here, underwent seven hours of surgery on Tuesday night.

He quit the ITV reality television show earlier this year after six days in the Australian jungle following the death of his grandmother.

Press reports have said he took two overdoses of sleeping tablets and alcohol in the past month, although a spokesman denied the stories as "totally untrue" at the time.

Depression

Harvey has previously boasted about drug-taking, admitting swallowing 12 ecstasy tablets in one night.

He fronted East 17 to become one of the UK's most successful pop groups of the 1990s, scoring 12 Top 10 hits including Stay Another Day, If You Ever and Each Time.

But a solo career stalled after comeback singles only grazed the Top 20 in 2001.

The singer has been suffering from clinical depression, although his manager said he was upbeat about recording some new music just days before the alleged suicide bids.
