Crazy Frog hops to chart success
Crazy Frog CD
The Crazy Frog's Axel F is also a popular ringtone
The Crazy Frog ringtone has revved straight to the top of the charts, beating nearest rival Coldplay to the number one slot.

The new version of Axel F - the theme to the Beverly Hills Cop films - is the first mobile ringtone to make it into the charts.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said the tune's success was down to "its huge novelty appeal".

The Crazy Frog brought Oasis' brief flirtation with the top spot to an end.

TOP FIVE SINGLES
Crazy Frog - Axel F
Coldplay - Speed of Sound
Akon - Lonely
Amerie - 1 Thing
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc

The Manchester band fell five places to number six with Lyla.

The Crazy Frog, which has been subject to a massive marketing campaign in recent months, is the first mobile ringtone to cross over into the charts.

University of Birmingham sociologist Peter Webb, who has studied leisure consumption practices among teenagers, said the success of the single reflects the growing trend for young people to spend more money on mobile phones and computers than music.

The track's success means Coldplay's long-awaited single Speed of Sound, had to settle for second spot, while hip-hop band Akon fell one place to number three.

Other top ten new entries were Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani at eight, Shot you Down by Audio Bullys featuring Nancy Sinatra at nine, and 1 Thing by Amerie at four.

In the album charts, Damon Albarn's animated four-piece band Gorillaz went straight to the top with their new album Demon Days, as their single, Feel Good Inc, fell one to number five.

Faithless dropped one place to two with Forever Faithless - The Greatest Hits, while The Coral's third album, The Invisible Invasion, was a new entry at three.
