Peter O'Toole
The film will see Peter O'Toole return to his native Ireland
Peter O'Toole and Samantha Morton have signed up to appear in a new Lassie film, to be shot in Ireland and the Isle of Man later this month.

Lassie, directed by Britain's Charles Sturridge, will also star John Lynch, Jemma Redgrave and Steve Pemberton from TV comedy the League of Gentlemen.

The cast also includes Rab C Nesbitt star Gregor Fisher.

Sturridge also wrote the screenplay, based on Eric Knight's classic 1938 novel Lassie Come Home.

Entertainment Film Distributors will distribute the film in the UK, according to reports from the Cannes film festival.

Deals have also been reached in Japan, the Middle East and various territories in Europe.

Plucky collie Lassie made his first screen appearance in 1943's Lassie Come Home, starring Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor.

However, he has not been seen on the big screen since 1994.

The new film is being produced by Firstsight Films, Classic Media and Ireland's Element Films, producers of Omagh and The Magdalene Sisters.
