US rapper Foxy Brown is to undergo surgery after being diagnosed with sudden hearing loss.

The singer, whose real name is Inga Marchand, says she has not heard another person's voice since May and will have an operation next year.

Her ex-lawyer revealed her condition last week when asked why they passed notes at court as they waited for her unresolved assault case to begin.

Brown's Chyna Doll album was a US number one in 1999.

At a press conference in New York, Brown said she would resume the work on new material, which had been delayed by her diagnosis, after the operation.

Court case

She said: "I ask only for your continued prayers and compassion as I embrace the blessings of my journey."

Lawyer Joseph Tacopina had disclosed her hearing loss last week while discussing his conduct towards his client at Manhattan Criminal Court.

The two parted company just days later.

Brown has refused two plea deals keeping her out of jail because she wants assault charges against her, stemming from an alleged attack on two nail salon workers in 2004, dropped to disorderly conduct.

Her new lawyer, Joseph Fleming, said he was "cautiously optimistic" that an agreement would be reached with prosecutors before her next court appearance on 23 December.
