Actress Patsy Kensit is to leave ITV soap Emmerdale and join the cast of BBC One medical drama Holby City.

Kensit, 37, who starred alongside Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 2, will feature as a nurse with "a few secrets to hide" in the show, from October next year.

Holby City bosses described Kensit as a "talented and popular actress who lights up the screen".

Kensit, who joined the Emmerdale cast in mid-2004, said she was "thrilled" to be joining a "brilliant" show.

She said: "I will really miss all my friends and colleagues at Emmerdale when I leave next August but look forward to living and working in London full time."

Holby City executive producer Richard Stokes said Kensit's character in the show has "an attitude that cannot fail to ruffle the feathers of her colleagues".

Kensit was nominated for the most popular newcomer at the National Television Awards for her role as Emmerdale's Sadie King last year.

The former child performer was once married to Oasis star Liam Gallagher.
