Comedies leading MTV movie awards
Lindsay Lohan

Comedies Mean Girls and Anchorman lead the field for the MTV Movie Awards with four nominations - although neither feature in the best film category.

Kill Bill: Volume 2, Spider-Man 2, Napoleon Dynamite, Ray and The Incredibles will compete for best film.

Mean Girls star Lindsay Lohan is nominated for best actress.

Her co-star in the film, Rachel McAdams, has five nominations to her name, for Mean Girls and The Notebook.

She has been nominated for best actress in the weepy The Notebook and best breakthrough performance for Mean Girls, as well as best kiss, best villain and best onscreen team.

The MTV Movie Awards will once again be hosted by comedian and actor Jimmy Fallon at a ceremony in Los Angeles on 4 June.

Best kiss

The awards are more irreverent than other big movie awards, recognising popular films and not just the critically acclaimed.

Among the categories are best fight scene, kiss and action sequence.

Will Ferrell

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy's nominations came in the best comedic performance category for star Will Ferrell, best on-screen team, best fight and best musical performance.

Competing in the best actor category are Oscar winner Jamie Foxx for Ray, Will Smith for Hitch, Brad Pitt for Troy, Matt Damon for The Bourne Supremacy and Leonardo for The Aviator.

Million Dollar Baby Oscar winner Hilary Swank is nominated for best actress alongside Uma Thurman for Kill Bill: Volume 2 and Natalie Portman for Garden State. Thurman won the best actress award last year for her turn in the first Kill Bill.
