Elvis Presley singles were reissued to mark his 70th anniversary
Elvis Presley remains the most successful chart act in the UK, having spent the greatest amount of time in the UK singles and album charts.

He is followed by Cliff Richard, Queen and The Beatles in a list made for the British Hit Singles and Albums book

Kylie Minogue made the greatest jump in the annual list, moving up 13 places to number 42.

Presley's chart success was boosted this year as his singles were reissued, scoring a further three UK number ones.

Madonna was the highest ranking woman, having topped the UK charts this year with single Hung Up and album Confessions on a Dancefloor.

Rapper Eminem was the highest new entry in the list compiled by Guinness World Records, entering at number 86.

Rock band Oasis overtook Status Quo for the first time, moving one place ahead of them into 25th position.

Despite making relatively few appearances in the UK chart over the past year, Britney Spears made her debut in the list at number 96.

An extra edition of the list was compiled earlier this year to mark the 1,000th UK number one, a position held by Presley's reissued One Night.
