Pictures of new Superman actor Brandon Routh in costume show the new film will keep the character's traditional look.
Superman actor Routh was chosen from hundreds of hopefuls
Rather than reinvent his appearance, director Bryan Singer has chosen to keep the cartoon superhero's cape, red tights and blue body suit intact.
"I always had the general idea of the suit," he told USA Today.
Superman Returns is currently shooting in Sydney. Kevin Spacey will star as the villainous Lex Luthor, while Kate Bosworth will play Lois Lane.
In the X-Men films, Singer replaced the comic book characters' fluorescent spandex suits with dark leather uniforms.
But the new Superman film, released in June 2006, will see Routh in a similar outfit to the one worn by Christopher Reeve in the previous Superman films.
"With X-Men, although they had extraordinary powers, they also had physical weaknesses," Singer told USA Today. "The suits were for protection as well as costume.
"Superman is the Man of Steel," he continued. "Bullets bounce off him, not the suit."
According to Singer, Superman's new costume - designed by Louise Mingenbach - shows "he's not afraid".
