Singer Courtney Love is to be allowed to leave a drug rehabilitation centre, where she was confined for 180 days by a court in California.

Judge Rand Rubin ordered Love to attend the centre in September, after she violated her probation by using drugs.

"You're doing really well. I'm really pleased with the reports," Judge Rubin told Love on Friday. She must still have regular drug and alcohol checks.

Love is on probation for drug offences and attacking a woman with a bottle.

The incident happened after Love found musician Kristin King in her boyfriend's home. The singer pleaded no contest to assault in February.

Ms King, the woman she hit with a whisky bottle and a large lit candle in April 2004, is suing Love over the incident.

The former Hole singer has been living at the residential rehabilitation centre since August.

"I certainly hope you keep up the good progress. You're definitely going in the right direction," Judge Rubin told the singer at the hearing at Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Love will have to submit to twice-weekly drug and alcohol tests and will be permitted to leave home only under certain circumstances, such as visits to the doctor or her probation officer.

"Things are going great," Love's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, told reporters after the hearing.

"She's moving forward and taking the process very seriously. She hopes this is the beginning of the next chapter in her life."
