Stage star back after cancer op
Maria Friedman
Maria Friedman was born in Switzerland
Musical actress Maria Friedman has returned to the stage just one week after breast cancer surgery.

She returned to the cast of Broadway's The Woman in White for preview performances and will perform the official opening on Thursday.

Friedman, 45, told the New York Times she would be starting radiation treatment in December.

She previously starred in the West End version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's show based on a Wilkie Collins novel.

Friedman began preview performances on 28 October but left six days later after discovering a lump on her breast.

'Enormous support'

During her one week absence her part was played by understudy Lisa Brescia.

"I'm not going for hero status. I'm doing what I can do, with enormous support," Friedman told the New York Times.

Friedman is a three-times Olivier winner, one of which was for her one-woman shows.

Her other stage credits on Broadway and in the West End include Chicago, The Witches of Eastwick and Hey, Mr Producer!

Born in Switzerland, Friedman was educated in Germany.
