Veteran singer-songwriter James Taylor is to be honoured for his charity work by organisers of the Grammy Awards.

He will be named the MusiCares Person of the Year for his 35-year music career and work on the environment and children's health issues.

Taylor, found fame in the early 1970s with songs such as Fire and Rain.

The US Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys and MusiCares, said Taylor was "an extraordinary human being, musician and humanitarian".

He had made "a global impact on music and culture", the Recording Academy's president Neil Portnow said.

Taylor won his first Grammy in 1971. In more recent years, he won the award for best pop album for Hourglass in 1998 and was nominated for his album October Road in 2003.

He will receive the MusiCares honour at a gala concert two days before next year's Grammy Awards, which will be held on 8 February.
