Paul Newman escaped unhurt after his race car caught fire in January

Hollywood veteran Paul Newman wants to retire from acting after his next film.

The 80-year-old star, who has had 10 Oscar nominations during his career, said he was "winding down" his acting and his other passion, motor racing.

He wanted to make another film "for good luck" - and it may be a reunion with his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid co-star Robert Redford, he said.

"We've been looking for something for 20 years and now we're looking harder. I hope something will come of it."

But he also said he hated to "talk about anything until the papers are drawn up".

'Horsing around'

Newman was last seen on the big screen in Road To Perdition with Tom Hanks in 2002, a role that earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

He was first nominated in 1959 for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and has since appeared in classics such as The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting and The Color of Money.

He said he would probably race for one more year, while his wife Joanne Woodward is due to retire as artistic director of the Westport Country Playhouse this year.

"If my racing stops, the two of us will be together, spend some time just horsing around," he said.

Earlier this year, the actor escaped unhurt after a sports car he was testing caught fire at Daytona Beach, Florida.
