Singer Edwyn Collins is "making progress" after suffering two brain haemorrhages, his wife has told fans.

The 45-year-old former Orange Juice frontman and solo star had brain surgery more than a week ago.

"Edwyn is making progress although it is still early days. He is very tough," Grace Maxwell wrote on his website.

She said she told the singer about the "truly lovely outpouring of good wishes" from fans. "It raises a smile," she wrote. "Keep thinking of him."

Fans from around the world have inundated his website with messages of support.

Collins was taken to hospital on 20 February, several days after complaining of vertigo and vomiting, which he put down to food poisoning.

He then had emergency surgery on 25 February after suffering a second haemorrhage.

Edinburgh-born Collins led Orange Juice to a number eight UK hit with Rip It Up in 1983. His solo single A Girl Like You reached number four in 1995.
