Soap leads Daytime Emmy shortlist
Ellen Degeneres
DeGeneres won last year's award for best talk show
The long-running daytime soap All My Children is leading the nominations for this year's Daytime Emmy awards.

The soap has been shortlisted in 18 categories, including best drama series, best directing team in a drama series and best actor.

Other multiple nominees include The Ellen DeGeneres show with 11 nominations and children's show Sesame Street, which received 13 nominations.

The winners will be announced on 20 May at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Lifestyle guru

A number of other soaps have received nominations in several categories, including General Hospital and Guiding Light, with 13 each. Both will compete against All My Children for the best drama series prize, as well as in the acting categories.

However, All My Children star Susan Lucci, who finally won an Emmy for her role in 1999 after 18 previous nominations, has not been shortlisted in the best actress category this year.

Actor Henry Winkler, best known for playing 'the Fonz' in Happy Days, and veteran film director Mel Brooks are also among the nominees, both receiving a nod for their voiceover work in cartoons. Actress Joan Cusack has been nominated in the same category.

Martha Stewart received three nominations for her show Martha Stewart Living. The lifestyle guru is due to be released from prison this week, after serving a five-month jail term for lying to investigators about a share sale.

Other nominees included Jeopardy, The Price is Right and Who Wants to be A Millionaire, which will all compete for outstanding game show.

Daytime Emmy awards are presented to programmes broadcast between 2am and 6pm. The ceremony is now in its 32nd year.
