Eric Clapton married Melia McEnery in 2002
The wife of influential guitarist Eric Clapton has given birth to the couple's third child.

The rock guitarist's American wife, Melia McEnery, gave birth to the child earlier this week.

Clapton's spokesman, Andy Prevezer, confirmed that "there has been a birth", but did not give details.

The 59-year-old singer-songwriter already has two young daughters with McEnery and a 19-year-old daughter, Ruth, from a previous relationship.

In 1991, Clapton's four-year-old son Connor, died after he fell from the 53rd-floor window of a New York apartment.

Clapton went on to write the hit track Tears in Heaven as a tribute to his son, whose mother was Italian television actress Lori Del Santo.

He married American Ms McEnery on New Year's Day, 2002.
