Sir Elton's free gig thrills Rome

Sir Elton John delighted 200,000 fans with a free show outside Rome's Colosseum on Saturday evening.

Fans started gathering at dawn to see the singer, who performed the show on the Via dei Fori Imperiali boulevard, which is lined with ancient relics.

Simon and Garfunkel performed there last year, and Sir Paul McCartney appeared at the site in 2003.

"I love the Italian way of life, the people, the attitudes," Sir Elton, who first performed in Italy in 1973, said.

"I love places that have an incredible history."

Sir Elton's last big live show was at London's Live 8 event, which he said he was "very pleased" to be a part of. But he also called it "an anti-climax" that lacked many highlights.
