Oscars 2005: The contenders
The 77th Academy Awards take place on Sunday. We list those in the running for an Oscar nod and examine their form in previous years.

BEST ACTOR

Jamie Foxx in Ray
Jamie Foxx tells the life story of soul legend Ray Charles in Ray
Jamie Foxx - Ray
Has never been nominated in the past. His additional nomination for best supporting actor for Collateral makes him the first man to have two acting nominations in the same year since Al Pacino in 1993. Nine people have previously got two acting nominations in the same year in Oscars history but none has ever won both.

Leonardo DiCaprio - The Aviator
DiCaprio's only previous nomination came for best supporting actor in 1994, when he was 19, for What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He lost out to Tommy Lee Jones.

Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby
Has had three personal Academy Award nominations in the past - one for best actor (Unforgiven, 1992) and two for best director (Unforgiven and Mystic River, 2004). He has won one - the directing statuette for Unforgiven. His additional nomination for best director marks the first time the same person has got nominations for both acting and directing in the same year since Roberto Benigni for Life Is Beautiful in 1999. Only Benigni and Sir Laurence Olivier have directed themselves to a best actor award - but no-one has ever won both best actor and best director in the same year.

Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland
This marks Depp's second nomination in a row after his first and only previous nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean last year. He was beaten by Sean Penn.

Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda
Has never been nominated before.

BEST ACTRESS

Clint Eastwood directed Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby
Hilary Swank - Million Dollar Baby
Won best actress the first and only time she was previously nominated - for Boys Don't Cry in 2000.

Annette Bening - Being Julia
Has been nominated twice before but has never won. She was up for best supporting actress for The Grifters in 1991, beaten by Whoopi Goldberg for Ghost, and best actress for American Beauty in 2000, when she lost out to Hilary Swank.

Imelda Staunton - Vera Drake
Has never been nominated before.

Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Winslet has been nominated three times before - but has never won. Her previous nominations were for Sense and Sensibility (1996), Titanic (1998) and Iris (2002).

Catalina Sandino Moreno - Maria Full of Grace
Never previously nominated, she becomes the first Colombian actor to be nominated and the first actress to be nominated for a foreign-language role since Fernanda Montenegro in Central Station in 1999.

BEST DIRECTOR

Martin Scorsese - The Aviator
Has been nominated six times before, four times for directing and twice for writing - but has never won. His previous directing nominations came for Raging Bull (1981), The Last Temptation of Christ (1989), Goodfellas (1991) and Gangs of New York (2003). Other directors to get at least four directing nominations but never win include Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Federico Fellini and Sidney Lumet.

Alexander Payne - Sideways
Has been nominated once before, in 2000 for writing Election, but has never previously had a directing nomination.

Taylor Hackford - Ray
He won the Oscar for best live action short film for Teenage Father in 1979 - but has not been nominated since.

Mike Leigh - Vera Drake
Has been nominated three times - once for directing (Secrets and Lies, 1997) and twice for writing (Secrets and Lies and Topsy-Turvy, 2000) - but has never won.

Has been nominated once before, for Elizabeth in 2000, but lost out to Gwyneth Paltrow. She is shortlisted in 2005 playing the person who has won more acting Oscars than anyone else, Katharine Hepburn - who won four times from 12 nominations.

Virginia Madsen - Sideways
Has never been nominated before.

Natalie Portman - Closer
Has never been nominated before.

Laura Linney - Kinsey
Has been nominated once before, for best leading actress, for You Can Count On Me in 2001, when Julia Roberts eventually won.

Sophie Okonedo - Hotel Rwanda
Has never been nominated before.
