A man suspected of shooting US singer Marc Cohn in the head has been charged with attempted murder.

Cohn - whose biggest hit was 1991's Walking in Memphis - was shot during an alleged attempted carjacking as he left a concert in Denver, Colorado.

The Grammy-winning musician was struck on the temple by the bullet but it did not penetrate his skull.

Joseph Yacteen, 26, has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and is also facing other charges.

Stolen card

Cohn was shot in the temple on 7 August when a man fired his band's van in a parking garage.

Police at the time said the bullet appeared to have been slowed by the van's windshield and by Cohn's driver and tour manager Thomas Dube, who was grazed by the bullet.

Both Cohn and Mr Dube were treated in hospital and released the following day.

Two other men, Jay Bellerose and Michael Barakan, were also in the van and all four are named as victims in the attempted first-degree murder charge, Denver district attorney's spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said.

Prosecutors allege that Mr Yacteen was fleeing police after trying to pay a hotel bill with a stolen credit card.

Further charges

He also allegedly tried to take another car from a woman before getting away in a stolen car.

Mr Yacteen was also charged with second-degree assault, aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted aggravated robbery, 12 counts of menacing and two counts of first-degree criminal trespass.

He would face up to 90 years in prison if convicted of all counts, Ms Kimbrough said.

Mr Yacteen's girlfriend, Patricia Vail, 23, was also charged for allegedly helping himwhile he was running from police.

She has been released on $50,000 (£27,700) bail, but Mr Yacteen remains in custody.
