Surprise two-day weddings, bizarrely named babies and that flash from Janet Jackson were just some of the memorable showbiz events of 2004.

JANUARY

Pop star Britney Spears kicked off the year by getting married in Las Vegas to a childhood friend - 55 hours later the marriage was annulled with both sides calling it a mistake.

Kinks singer Ray Davies was shot in the leg after he chased two alleged muggers who had snatched his female companion's purse in New Orleans. He recovered in time to collect his CBE at Buckingham Palace in March, although he used a walking stick.

Hollywood actress Kate Hudson and rocker husband Chris Robinson had a son, Ryder Russell. Comic Peter Kay and wife Susan had a son called Charlie Michael.

FEBRUARY

US Singer Janet Jackson's live performance at the Super Bowl left her more than a little exposed as Justin Timberlake ripped her costume to reveal her heavily pierced nipple. The so-called "wardrobe malfunction" generated the most complaints in TV history and has led to a crackdown on decency on TV in the US.

Former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry McFadden was crowned Queen of the Jungle on reality TV show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here.

Sex and the City ended its run on TV causing much sadness among its largely female audience who had been following the trials, tribulations and fabulous shoes of the quartet for six years.

Singer Charlotte Church reached the grand old age of 18 and gained access to a million pound trust earned from her younger singing days. Since then, she has rarely been out of the papers but has been noticeably absent from the charts.

Friends star Matt LeBlanc's wife Melissa McKnight had a daughter, Marina Pearl.

US talk show host Rosie O'Donnell married her partner Kelli Carpenter in San Francisco.

American millionaire lifestyle guru Martha Stewart was convicted of lying to federal investigators over the sale of shares in a drug company. She was later sentenced to five months in jail, which she started in October.

Westlife, one of the biggest boy bands, slimmed down with the departure of Brian McFadden - the husband of Kerry, Queen of the Jungle.

Actors Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz announced their three-year relationship was over.

APRIL

Canadian singer Alanis Morissette stripped down to a "nude suit" when she was hosting an awards ceremony in Edmonton, Canada. She was protesting at the increase in censorship in the US in the wake of Janet Jackson's earlier "wardrobe malfunction".

Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor set off on a round-the-world motorbike trip with pal Charley Boorman.

Singer Sophie Ellis Bextor had her first child, a son called Sonny. Actress Cate Blanchett gave birth to son Roman.

MAY

EastEnders soap actor Leslie Grantham was caught up in a real-life scandal when he was forced to issue an apology to fellow cast mates after he allegedly insulted them during a saucy web chat.

Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay singer Chris Martin celebrated the birth of their daughter who was given the surprise name of Apple. EastEnders star Kacey Ainsworth gave birth to a daughter, coincidently called Blossom.

Actress Kate Beckinsale married director Len Wiseman, who she met on the set of Underworld. The film also starred her long-time boyfriend Michael Sheen, the father of their daughter Lily.

UK viewers said goodbye to the US TV comedy Friends after 10 years of sharing the characters' woes over coffee in Central Perk. The finale had been shown in the US weeks earlier.

JUNE

American singer Jennifer Lopez made her third trip down the aisle with Latino singer Marc Anthony. The pair married nine months after Lopez and Hollywood actor Ben Affleck called off their high-profile engagement.

The contestants of the UK's reality TV show Big Brother hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons when a brawl broke out in the house and the police arrived after calls from concerned viewers. The incident led to housemate Emma being axed from the show over fears her return would spark more violence. Ofcom upheld complaints that the fight was not stopped soon enough.

Reality TV hit Hell's Kitchen crowned former Brookside actress Jennifer Ellison as the winner, having endured two weeks of working under fiery chef Gordon Ramsey.

American actors Courtney Cox and David Arquette had a daughter Coco.

JULY

Actress Catherine Zeta Jones made an emotional appearance in a Los Angeles court room as she gave evidence against her alleged stalker, who threatened to "slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs". The woman had an alleged obsession with Zeta Jones' husband Michael Douglas. The case has yet to be completed.

Hollywood star Nicholas Cage, 40, married 20-year-old waitress Alice Kim, his third wife. He was divorced from Lisa Marie Presley just two months before after a marriage lasting less than four months.

AUGUST

After a torrid year in the tabloids, David and Victoria Beckham announced they were expecting a third child in early March 2005.

Other stars to see new arrivals this month included Harvey Keitel, Kelsey Grammer, Brendan Fraser and Mariella Frostrup.

SEPTEMBER

Madonna embarked on a pilgrimage to Israel as part of her faith in the Kabbalah. The spiritual trip was marred by an alleged scuffle between her bodyguards and photographers, resulting in several arrests in Tel Aviv.

Britney Spears tied the knot - for the second time in a year. This time it was a planned yet hush-hush ceremony that caught out all the paparazzi. She married dancer Kevin Federline at a friend's home in Los Angeles.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise rolled into London to promote his movie Collateral and did not disappoint fans as he went on his now trademark two-and-a-half hour walkabout to chat with them, sign autographs and speak on their mobile phones to their friends and family.

Fellow US actor Kevin Costner married at his Colorado ranch. Guests, who included Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Willis, were treated to a weekend of outdoor activities including baseball and horse riding.

Des O'Connor celebrated the birth of a son at the age of 72. Billy Bob Thornton became a dad again - his fourth child.

Max Clifford, publicist to Kerry and Brian McFadden, announced the couple's marriage was in trouble due to problems caused by their hectic careers. The couple are now said to have separated.

OCTOBER

Former Soft Cell frontman Marc Almond was critically injured in a motorbike accident in London. He is now making a good recovery and hopes to be back recording next year.

Hollywood actor Richard Dreyfuss pulled out of the West End production of The Producers just weeks before it was due to start, saying he "could not fulfil the rigours of the role". The day was saved by Nathan Lane who had starred in the Broadway version. He wowed London audiences and ensured his run was a sell-out.

Sir Elton John attacked Madonna for miming during live shows during an awards presentation. Her people denied she mimed and Sir Elton later apologised.

US singer Billy Joel married his 23-year-old partner. It was his third trip down the aisle and the first for the now Mrs Joel. Joel was previously married to model Christie Brinkley.

NOVEMBER

Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne confronted a burglar in his Buckinghamshire mansion. Despite his efforts, thieves made off with more than 2m in jewels.

US stars Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake were sued by two paparazzi photographers, who alleged the couple attacked them as they tried to take their picture.

Hollywood star Julia Roberts and husband Danny Moder celebrated the premature birth of twins Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter. EastEnders star Jessie Wallace gave birth to Tullulah Lilac.

Former DJ Chris Evans sold off his belongings from a stall in London's Camden Market following his split from wife Billie Piper.

DECEMBER

JK Rowling announced the date for the release of the sixth Harry Potter novel - fans will have to wait until 16 July to discover what the young wizard gets up to next.

Joe Pasquale took over the mantle of King of the Jungle on I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here. The comic can expect his star to shine in 2005, until the next series.

EastEnders actress Jill Halfpenny waltzed away as the new Queen of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, while over on ITV's The X Factor contestant Steve Brookstein won the 1m recording contract, despite getting a roasting from judge Sharon Osbourne.
