Former child star Macaulay Culkin has pleaded guilty to possessing medication without a prescription and marijuana.

The 24-year-old star was given one-year deferred jail sentences for each charge and ordered to pay $540 (300) fees in court in Oklahoma City.

He was arrested last September after police found more than half an ounce of marijuana and Xanax, a drug used to treat depression and panic disorders.

Mr Culkin rose to fame after the success of the 1990 film Home Alone.

"This was a rare circumstance for Mr Culkin. He was not an abuser," said district attorney Greg Mashburn.

The actor, who was present at the Oklahoma County courthouse, completed a drug and alcohol evaluation as part of his probation.

He recently testified at Michael Jackson's child abuse trial in Santa Maria, California, denying the singer had ever touched him inappropriately while staying at Neverland Ranch as a child.

Mr Jackson has pleaded not guilty to 10 charges, including the alleged abuse of a 13-year-old boy in 2003.
