TV on the Radio collect US prize

TV on the Radio saw off UK stars like Dizzee Rascal
US band TV on the Radio have won the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize, which celebrates emerging musical talent.

The fivesome beat UK artists Dizzee Rascal, Franz Ferdinand and The Streets to the $10,000 (£5,563) award, regarded as the US Mercury Music Prize.

An awards concert was held on Monday night in Los Angeles, with performances from Dizzee Rascal and Nellie McKay.

TV on the Radio's debut album Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes received an enthusiastic response from the critics.

The band experiment with dance music mixed with guitars, and are difficult to pigeon-hole into one genre.

They have extensively toured the US and have made forays into Europe.

The Shortlist Prize recognises artists who have sold less than 500,000 copies of their album at the time of nomination, and is open to artists from any country.

Judging panel

Others who missed out this year include former Wu Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah, French duo Air and country and western singer Loretta Lynn.

The judging panel was made up of people in the music industry, including actor and musician Jack Black, singer Norah Jones, The Dixie Chicks and Robert Smith of The Cure.

Last year the Shortlist was won by Damien Rice for his album O. He has gone on to enjoy international success.

The Shortlist concert will be broadcast on MTV2 on 20 November.
