Star Chan carries Olympic torch
Martial arts film star Jackie Chan will be one of three Chinese people to carry the Olympic torch on one of its final stages in Greece this summer.

He will carry the torch for 400m through the Greek city of Salonika on its way to Athens.

Sun Wen, former captain of the women's soccer team, and actor Pu Chunxi will also carry the torch.

Chan, who has become a star thanks to his acrobatic film roles, features in Around the World in 80 Days.


Rolling Stone leads tribute show

Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards has led tributes to his old friend Gram Parsons at two tribute concerts in the US on the weekend.

He played at Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons in Santa Barbara on Friday, and another show on Saturday at the Universal Amphitheatre.

Norah Jones, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Dwight Yoakam also took part in the tributes.

Parsons, a former member of the Byrds, died in 1973 of a drug overdose.


German actress Meysel dies at 94

German actress Inge Meysel has died of cardiac arrest at her home near Hamburg, aged 94.

Meysel starred in the 1959 box office hit Roses for the Prosecutor and 1981's The Red Stocking.

She began her career aged 20, but was barred from performing in theatres in the Nazi era as her father was Jewish.

German president Horst Koehler said the country had lost "a remarkable person whose inimitable style got to people's hearts".


Brown approaches police deadline

Singer Bobby Brown has been ordered to turn himself in to prison officials by Sunday on charges that he hit his wife, Whitney Houston.

In May a court ruled that Brown must stand trial on battery charges for allegedly hitting Houston at their home in Alpharetta, Georgia, in December.

If the 35-year-old does not report to Atlanta police for fingerprinting a warrant for his arrest may be issued.

Simple battery is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 (£537) fine.


Spain honours film actor Banderas

Actor Antonio Banderas has been honoured by Spain's Cinema Academy for promoting Spanish culture during his international film career.

The 43-year-old received the gold medal accolade in his southern home town of Malaga on Friday.

Banderas appeared in Evita and films by director Pedro Almodovar among others.

"It may have been the biggest surprise of my career when they told me about the award, which generally is given to people much older then me," he said.
