Singer and actress Courtney Love, 39, was nearly branded a fugitive by a US judge on Monday after turning up five hours late to a court hearing.
Ms Love's legal problems led her to cancel a string of concerts
Ms Love was due to appear in a New York court at 0930EST (1430GMT) to answer reckless endangerment charges relating to an incident in a nightclub in March.
However, the former Hole singer did not turn up until 1500EST (2000GMT).
Judge Melissa Jackson reprimanded the singer, saying that she narrowly missed being arrested for her non-appearance.
"I want to make it clear to you that you are supposed to be in court at 9:30, not 3 o'clock," Ms Jackson said.
"Three o'clock is not acceptable. The rule applies to you, the same as it does to everyone else," the judge said.
Ms Love took out a box of cigarettes as she stood waiting in the courtroom, and mumbled her apologies to the judge.
Love has faced three other court cases in recent months
Ms Love is accused of allegedly injuring a man after throwing a microphone into the crowd at an East Village nightclub in New York.
If found guilt of the reckless endangerment charge she could face up to a year in jail.
During the hearing, the singer appeared fidgety, and was at one stage warned to keep quiet after talking to another handcuffed defendant waiting in turn.
An arrest warrant had been issued against Ms Love, the widow of Nirvana's late frontman Kurt Cobain, by a California judge earlier this year after she had missed two scheduled court hearings relating to two other criminal cases.
The warrant was dropped when Ms Love turned up to a further court hearing.
Earlier this month she turned herself in to authorities in California over an assault charge relating to an incident in April when Ms Love broke into the Los Angeles home of her ex-boyfriend and allegedly assaulted a 32-year-old woman.
In May, the singer pleaded guilty to being under the influence of cocaine after police found damaging property in October 2003. She is also facing another drug possession charge.
Love has cancelled a forthcoming summer tour to deal with her complicated legal wrangles.
