Stolen 'Cezanne' painting found

Art historians believe the painting may be a forgery

A hoard of stolen paintings, including a work said to be by impressionist Paul Cezanne, has been recovered by police in Australia.

Taken from art restorer John Opit in February, the paintings were found at a home in Queensland's Gold Coast.

Mr Opit said 25 paintings were stolen, including an 1873 Cezanne entitled Paul Cezanne's Son in a High Chair.

He said the painting was worth A$50m (£18.6m) but art historians have been unable to confirm its authenticity.

Suspects

It has been suggested that it is a forgery which had possibly been painted by the son of a doctor who looked after the Cezanne family.

The paintings and other items were taken from Mr Opit's New South Wales workshop. He was ecstatic at the police find.

"I'm jumping for joy," he told the Australian Associated Press news agency.

Police made no arrests on Thursday but said they were still searching for two suspects.
