Rock band The Libertines have cancelled appearances at two summer festivals because their lead singer is ill.

Pete Doherty is currently recuperating at a Buddhist monastery in Thailand.

The band will now not appear at this weekend's Isle Of Wight festival or Glastonbury. A show at London's Meltdown event has also been axed.

However, the band plan to continue with their other festival appearances in July and August, including those at T in the Park, Reading and Leeds.

They also plan to appear at Ireland's Oxegen festival as billed.

'Painful period'

The Libertines apologised to fans for the cancellations.

Band member Carl Barat said: "We felt that we should not continue with these shows in order to show support for Peter whilst he is recuperating.

"It has obviously been a very painful period for the band and we wish Peter better more than anything. His health comes first."

The cancellations do not affect drummer Gary Powell's plans to appear with the New York Dolls at their two Meltdown dates at the Royal Festival Hall on 16 and 18 June.

The Libertines have been a favourite of the UK music press since their singles chart debut in June 2002 with What A Waster.

Since then they have built up a devoted fan base, and enjoyed their biggest hit in August 2003 with Don't Look Back Into The Sun.

Outside the band, Doherty enjoyed a top ten hit in May with For Lovers, a collaboration with Wolfman.

But Doherty's troubled personal life has also put him into the spotlight.

He was temporarily sacked from the band in July 2003 because of his heroin and crack addiction.

Doherty was then jailed for six months after breaking into a flat owned by bandmate Barat, but the sentence was cut to two months on appeal and the band reunited at a concert in October.
