Art show at Madrid bomb station

The Madrid railway station where 191 people were killed in train bombings is hosting a photographic exhibition that studies history and storytelling.

Atocha station is one of 51 venues hosting Spain's annual PHotoEspana (PHE04) exhibition.

While other venues display images of 11 September and D-Day, the station is displaying portraits taken on trains.

"We deliberately chose something very gentle for that space," said PHE04 director Pablo Berasategui.

The opening of the six-week festival included a small ceremony in honour of the victims of the bombings, believed to have been the work of Islamic militants.

History

Ten bombs exploded on four trains in and near Atocha station during the busy morning rush hour on 11 March.

PHE04 organisers said they hoped their decision to use Atocha to display some of the exhibits will contribute to Madrid's return to normal following the attacks.

The theme of this year's festival is Historias, which in Spanish means both "history" and "story", with more than 170 international artists exhibiting work.

They include Mexican Enrique Metinides, who looks at disasters, accidents and human tragedy, and US photographer Dennis Adams, who captures images of newspapers reporting the 11 September attacks floating in the air in Manhattan.

Artistic director Horacio Fernandez said exhibits "narrate the multiple meanings to be found in the confused times we are now living".
