Poseidon Adventure tops film poll

Titanic came second in the poll of 500 cinema staff
Classic movie The Poseidon Adventure has been voted the best disaster film of all time in a survey.

The 1972 film about a luxury liner hit by a tidal wave topped the list ahead of the Oscar-winning Titanic and fire disaster movie The Towering Inferno.

Airport, The Abyss, Independence Day and Twister were also in the top 10 chosen in a poll of 500 staff at the UCI cinema chain.

It marks the release of global warming thriller The Day After Tomorrow.

Starring Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal, it imagines a New York taken over by an ice age.

The Poseidon Adventure, starring Gene Hackman, was released in an era well remembered for disaster movies, before special effects technology changed the face of cinema.

The film tells the story of a luxury liner capsizing on New Year's Eve after it is hit by a tidal wave. A group of survivors attempt to find their way to the top of the ship, which is upside down.

Titanic, starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet, a huge box office hit and winner of 11 Oscars, was voted worst film ever by viewers of BBC One's Film 2003.

The Towering Inferno, released in 1974 and starring Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, is about a fire breaking out at the opening party of the world's tallest skyscraper.
