Brad Pitt's epic Troy has stormed the
North American box office on its opening weekend, taking the top spot from monster movie Van Helsing.

The adaptation of Homer's The Iliad took $45.6m (£25.8m), box office trackers Exhibitor Relations said.
Van Helsing fell to second place after one week at the top, with an estimated $20.1m (£11.4m) in ticket sales.
In fourth place, comedy Breakin' All the Rules was the only other new entry in the top 10.
Teenage drama Mean Girls was at number three while Denzel Washington thriller Man on Fire fell to fifth place.

Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore's romantic comedy Laws of Attraction and Kill Bill: Volume 2 remained in the top 10, in eighth and ninth place respectively.
Troy, which cost $200m (£115m) to make, topped the box office despite receiving mixed reviews.
Alongside Brad Pitt, it also stars Lord of the Rings actor Orlando Bloom, Hulk star Eric Bana and British performers Julie Christie, Brian Cox and Peter O'Toole.
