Shawshank tops Oscar failure poll
ET was third in the poll
The Shawshank Redemption has been voted the best film never to have won an Oscar in a poll conducted for the Radio Times Guide To Films.

Sentimental favourite It's A Wonderful Life came second, while ET came third. 2001: A Space Odyssey was fourth and The Great Escape was fifth.

Nearly 6,000 people took part in a poll on the Radio Times website.

Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont said he was "truly blown away" by the survey's findings.

He added: "Making this most meaningful is the fact that it's voted for by those whose opinions count most - the audience.

"I'm extremely grateful to all who voted and put my film in such exalted company. What a list to be on!"

Film critic and Radio Times columnist Barry Norman said: "Looking at this list really exposes the major voting mistakes Academy members have made over the years.

"Each of these films have left their own indelible mark on the face of movie history, but amazingly, all managed to go home empty-handed in the major categories on their respective Oscar nights."

The survey was based on films which had not won best film, best actor, best actress, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best director and best foreign language film.
