Denzel Washington's latest film, Man on Fire, has topped the US box office by taking an estimated $23m (13m) in its opening weekend.

The revenge thriller beat comedy 13 Going on 30, in which Jennifer Garner plays a teenager trapped in a woman's body, which took $22m (12.4m).

Last week's chart-topper Kill Bill: Volume 2 took $10.4m (5.9m) but fell to third in the North America chart.

It was followed by The Punisher and Home on the Range.

It was the first time two films each took more than $20m (11m) on the same weekend in April, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

Man on Fire surpassed Washington's previous best weekend opening, the 2001 police movie Training Day, for which he won a best actor Oscar.

Meanwhile Quentin Tarantino's revenge saga Kill Bill 2 opened strongly around the world.

It topped box office charts in the UK, Italy and Australia and took an estimated total of $18m (10m) in 21 territories.

All its box office figures were higher than opening takings for Kill Bill: Volume 1 in the same areas.
