Starlight is revived for UK tour
Lord Lloyd Webber with the Starlight Express cast

Andrew Lloyd Webber's rollerskating musical Starlight Express is to return for a national tour after its West End run ended in 2002 after 18 years.

The long-running show is being revamped for the tour which will begin in November at Manchester's Opera House.

The production will also travel to Bristol, Oxford, Sunderland, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Southampton, with more dates to be announced later this year.

The West End version was second only to Cats as the longest-running musical.

Success

The reworked version of the show will include new lyrics by David Yazbek, who also composed the score for the musical version of The Full Monty.

It first opened in March 1984 at London's Apollo Victoria theatre where it remained until it was replaced by a new Lloyd Webber production, Bombay Dreams.

It made 140m at the box office during its 18-year stint, playing to over 18 million people.

The musical continued its success abroad after it closed in London, with sell-out shows in the US, Japan, Germany and Australia.

Lord Lloyd Webber told the audience of the final West End show: "I promise it's never going to go away at all for any length of time," he said.

"We will find a way of doing it again."

The impresario's new musical, The Woman in White, opens at London's Palace Theatre on 15 September.

Michael Crawford returns to the West End stage in the lead role 18 years after he starred in The Phantom of the Opera.

Meanwhile, Bombay Dreams is closing for at least a year from June for a major revamp.

Lord Lloyd Webber wants the London production to take on the changes in storyline, stages and set that will be unveiled in its New York version when it opens next month.
