Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the second film to be based upon the popular video game series.
Jovovich's character Alice must fight against zombies and evil businessmen in a bid to escape from the doomed Raccoon City.
Its success follows the two films based upon the Tomb Raider video game series, which starred Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft.
The US box office top 10 also featured Vanity Fair in seventh place and Tom Cruise film Collateral at number eight.
