Geri set for second place - again

Eyes on the top: Geri Halliwell is being beaten by Boyzone

Geri Halliwell could be about to suffer the curse of Boyzone again - as the Irish pop group threaten to keep the former Spice Girl from the top of the charts once more.

Early figures indicate Boyzone's greatest hits album By Request is selling more copies than Halliwell's debut album Schizophonic - which could lead to the boy band's second chart victory over her.

Last month Halliwell's debut solo single, Look At Me, was pipped to the top spot by Boyzone's You Needed Me by an unusually slim margin of 100 copies.

This time round, some shops are reporting Boyzone are outselling Halliwell by a ratio of five to one.

Last week, By Request sold 329,000 copies in its first six days alone.

Meanwhile former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller is battling it out with Madonna for the number one single.

His new proteges, S Club 7, are the stars of BBC One series Miami 7, which follows the pop group's fictional adventures across the Atlantic.

Their song, Bring It All Back, is up against Madonna's Beautiful Stranger, which comes from the forthcoming Austin Powers movie, The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Fuller's other post-Spice Girls acts have not done so well - guitar-wielding teenagers 21st Century Girls only reached number 16 in last week's chart with their eponymous single.

Chart expert Jason Legg, from the HMV retail chain, said: "Sales are quite close so far this week but it looks like S Club 7 will be at number one at the weekend.

"They have definitely captured the imagination with their TV series. They are a huge multi-media event."
