Scooby stays top of UK box office
Cartoon movie sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed has topped the UK box office chart for a third week.

The Adam Sandler comedy 50 First Dates and zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead stay at two and three respectively.

Time-travel thriller The Butterfly Effect and teen romp The Girl Next Door are new entries at five and six.

Arabian adventure Hidalgo starring Lord of the Rings' Viggo Mortensen and Omar Sharif was the only other new entry in ninth place.


Miramax chief gets honorary CBE

Harvey Weinstein, the co-chairman and founder of movie studio Miramax, is to receive an honorary CBE.

He is getting the award for services to UK film, the British Consul General in New York, Sir Thomas Harris said.

"I am delighted that Harvey Weinstein's contribution to film-making in general, and the British cinema in particular, has been recognised," he said.

Miramax has produced films including Cold Mountain, Shakespeare in Love and The English Patient.


Australian director Burstall dies

Australian film director Tim Burstall, who made films that starred Hollywood actors Mel Gibson and Sam Neill, has died aged 76 after a stroke.

Mr Burstall had a career in the Australian industry lasting 50 years. He made several films, including Stork, Alvin Purple, Mrs Fraser and Attack Force Z.

The latter film, made in 1982, starred Gibson and Neill as World War II commandos attacking a Japanese base.

"Tim was a great conceptualiser and activist on behalf of the industry and enthusiastically took personal responsibility for its development," his son Tom Burstall said.


Love trial postponed until May

Singer Courtney Love's trial on drug and vandalism charges has been postponed until next month.

The former Hole singer and widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was due to appear on Saturday to hear charges.

The charges stem from last October when she was arrested in front of a Beverly Hills mansion and sent to hospital.

Meanwhile, a Beverly Hills Superior Court judge has ordered 39-year-old Love to appear at a hearing on 30 April for drug possession charges.


Carrie's Spacek returns to horror

Actress Sissy Spacek, the star of the Stephen King horror Carrie, is to return to big screen horror in a remake of the Japanese supernatural thriller Ring 2.

The film, a sequel to the Hollywood remake of the Japanese horror, will also star Naomi Watts. It begins shooting in May.

Details of Spacek's role in the film are being kept under wraps.

The film will be directed by its original director, Hideo Nakata.


Air play concert at Eden Project

French electronica band Air are to play a concert at Cornwall's Eden Project in the summer.

The duo, who recently released the album Talkie Walkie, will play the botanical venue on 13 August.

The group join a line-up for this year's Eden Sessions live season that also features Beach Boy singer Brian Wilson in July.

All of the proceeds of the show will go to the Eden Project. Previous acts to play there include PJ Harvey and Doves.


MTV awards move to Miami

MTV will this year hold its 21st Video Music Awards in Miami for the first time, on 29 August.

The awards will be held at the American Airlines Arena, the cable television network said on Friday.

In recent years, either LA or New York has hosted the event, which celebrates the year's best music videos.

An awards executive explained: "There were very, very limited venue possibilities in New York because of the Republican National Convention."


Golden Bear winner competes for £1.9m

A film by a German-Turkish director will lead the nominees for the world's most lucrative national film prize,

Head-On will compete against five other German movies for the 2.9m euro (£1.9m) German Film Prize on 18 June.

The low-budget production, from Fatih Akin, won Berlin Film Festival's Golden Bear for best film in February.

It follows a young Turkish woman in Hamburg trying to break away from her strict Muslim home.
